Good fantasy novel set in medieval Russia

The Bear and the Nightingale: A Novel - Katherine Arden

This fantasy novel is set in medieval Russia and involves dark forces, ancient magic and the Christian church vying for control over Vasya, a gifted child. All her extended family are involved in the storyline and good characterisation gives each of them their own detailed identity.

The blurb compares this novel to the work of Neil Gaiman – justifiably – but it also makes me think of Robin Hobb's latest works. Unfortunately it does not leave a lasting impression but was enjoyable reading nonetheless.

Dark yet entertaining, this book is recommended to a wide readership
