Fantasy novel with many original ideas – not bad but nothing terrific

Mirrorscape - Mike Wilks

Aimed at the YA reader, this fantasy novel has lots of originality dealing with artists being able to enter their paintings. A young talented apprentice, Mel, is taken on by one of the greatest artists in his world and meets the now-usual bullying while under his tutelage. He also finds friends to consort with and learn from.

Although quite entertaining and the first part of a trilogy, I did not find it sufficiently engaging to want ot read the next volumes. Well-written and better in the first half in my opinion.
