I’d already encountered some of this work in French magazines where Jimenez is better-known. These are short tales which illustrate the poor conditions in which orphans and other children were kept during the Franco era in Spain. They are not happy stories, merely showing the despair of life in the orphanage/school: the children are kept hungry and thirsty, humiliated, deprived of affection and beaten or censored at every opportunity.
It looks as if they are based on true stories. Sad but interesting historically.
