Having acquired all 3 books in the series, I have now read the first which seems to be aimed mainly at a female Young Adult readership. It takes place in a dystopian future in which Chicago has been divided into five Factions to avoid future conflict. At the age of 16, young people are tested and then allocate themselves to one of these factions depending on their personal preference.

Beatrice joins the Dauntless and trains with them, discovering more about the rivalry between factions and uncovering a plot to create war between them. There is also a romantic side-plot running through the novel.

Quite engaging, this works well although the romance element is more suited to a female readership. It is interesting enough to warrant a look at the rest of the series.
