Vanessa is a private investigator hired to help to solve a murder in London in the late 19th century. The plot centres around the death of an anti-semitic scholar and a few key characters are introduced and developed.  I am torn in two directions with this novel as the background of the plight of the Jews in this era, including the Dreyfus Affair, is dealt with at length and well-developed and researched.
